Bhutan striker Yeshey Bidha takes an attempt towards Sri Lanka goal line.

Sonam Lhamo struck a brilliant hat trick as hosts Bhutan beat Sri Lanka by 6-0 in their SAFF Under-15 Women’s Championship 2018 opener at the Chalimithang Stadium in Thimphu on 11 August 2018.

Yeshey Bidha added two goals while Deki Yangdong netted one goal.

Bhutan, who ended their mission without a win in the maiden episode of this tournament last year in Dhaka, looked a much better side this time.

The home side lodged domination over their opponents from the start of the match as they created a bright chance in the 5th minute and afterwards they continued creating pressure on the opponents’ backline.

Sonam Lhamo opened account in the 9th minute when her long shot from edge-of-the-box crowd deceived the Sri Lanka goalkeeper.

Sri Lanka women after 15 minutes seemed to be slightly organized to make some pressure but not enough to make an impact. However, Bhutan got themselves back comfortably and kept their opponents busy at the defense line.

Sonam Lhamo again came forward to finish an attack in the 38th minute to go to the half time 2-0.

Returning in the second half, the home side produced more attacks capitalizing shortcomings of their opponents. Sri Lanka, though they were struggling to find ground, seemed to be organized in defending Bhutan attacks.

After a number of chances, Bhutan advanced the scoreline to 3-0 with Yeshey Bidha scoring in the 67th minute. Deki Yangdon made it 4 goals to nil scoring in the 77th minute. Sonam in the next minute scored to complete her hat trick.

Yeshi Bidha netted her second goal in the 83rd minute to seal the margin 6-0.

Sonam was later named as Player of the Match. Bhutan will play their next and last group match against India on 13 August 2018.

Sri Lanka conceived a heavy defeat to India in their first match by 12 goals.
