Hosts Nepal got off to a flying start in the fifth edition of SAFF Under-15 Championship when they thrashed Maldives 4-0 in the opening game of Group A at the ANFA Complex, Kathmandu on Thursday, October 25, 2018.
The beaten finalists in the previous edition, Nepal led the first half 2-0 thanks to goals from Jaan Limbu and Namas Thapa Magar before Sashank Bhora and Dipesh Gurung added two more goals in the second half.
Limbu struck from penalty in 28th minute after midfielder Rakesh Biswokarma was brought down by Maldives defender Nabuhan Mohamed inside the box.
Magar flicked home in the 35th minute to double the lead for home side.
Bhora found the back of nets in 63rd minute before Gurung sealed the deal with a brilliant finish in the 70th minute.
Rakesh, one of the best performers of the game, played a cross from the right side to Gurung, who moved back to volley past Maldives goalkeeper.
Bangladesh are the other team of the Group A in the tournament.
Pakistan shocked defending champions India by 2-1 goals earlier in the day in a Group B game to give the tournament, participated by six South Asian countries, a perfect kick start.
Pakistan will play Bhutan in the next game of the tournament on Saturday, October 27 with the game scheduled to kick off at 11:30am local time.
Bangladesh will open their campaign on the same day against Maldives at 14:30 local time.
The tournament will run from October 25 to November 3 in Kathmandu.
