India and Bangladesh make winning starts

India and Bangladesh bagged three points each from their opening fixtures on the first day of the SAFF U17 Women’s Championship 2023 that got underway in Dhaka on Monday.

India defeated Nepal 4-1 in the first match of the championship, while hosts Bangladesh registered a one-sided 8-1 win over Bhutan.

India opened their scoring in 10th minute through Shilji Shahji and there was no looking back for the Indian side who had developed a comfortable 3-0 margin going into the interval.

Shilji Shahji got her second goal in the 40th minute and Pooja added one immediately after that in the 41st minute. Shilji Shahji completed her hat-trick in the 81st minute, giving her team their fourth goal.

Nepal reduced the deficit in the 54th minute through Barsha Oli.

In the second match of the day, hosts Bangladesh had it all easy against Bhutan as they began the match on a bright note scoring four goals in the first half.

Shree Moti Trishna Rani gave Bangladesh the lead in the 16th minute and by the 28th minute she had found her double. MST Sultana Akter and Sauravi Akanda Prity were also on the mark scoring in the 35th and 42 minutes respectively.

In the second half, Thuinuye Marma scored a brace with the goals coming in the 60th and 77th minutes, while Munne and MST Sagorika got themselves in the scoresheet in the 77th and 85th minutes respectively.

Bhutan bagged a consolation goal in the Preya Ghalley in the 64th minute.
