Forward Chalini Kumari struck a brace as Sri Lanka defeated Maldives 2-0 to enter into the semi-final of SAFF Women Championship 2019 at Sahid Rangashala, Biratnagar, Nepal on Friday, March 15, 2019.
Sri Lanka win also confirmed the semi-final place of India from three-team Group B as they defeated Maldives 6-0 earlier in the tournament.
Knowing that a win would be enough for a spot in the knock-out phase, Sri Lanka pressed for goal from the start of the game and had been rewarded in the 38th minute after couple of missed chances.
Chalini struck after Maldives goalkeeper Aminath Leeza failed to clear a free kick of Erandi Liyange from the edge of the box.
The free-kick was awarded to the Sri Lankan side after Maldives skipper Fadhuwa Zahir handled the ball.
Chalini scored her second goal four minutes in the second half with a sliding shot after a cross of Achala Sanjeewani Perera from the right flank found her unmarked inside the box.
Sri Lanka will face India in their final group match on March 17 to decide the group championship.
Bangladesh and Nepal qualified for the semi-finals from Group A while Bhutan have been eliminated with successive defeats.
The fifth edition of the tournament will run until March 22.
